A group of gold hunters are planning to obtain permits to help continue 15 years worth of excavation work.<BR/><BR/>Over 30 feet has been dug by workers already at a site in the Manzano Mountains in New Mexico in a bid to find gold.<BR/><BR/>However work was stopped as the group hit a layer of limestone rock this week, according to the New Mexico Channel.<BR/><BR/>The gold treasure is part of local folklore that Spaniards buried the precious metal somewhere in the area when they were at war with American Indians and workers believe they are close to billions of dollars worth of gold.<BR/><BR/>Having worked on the project for years, the Ramirez family have got guards with machine guns protecting the site because of the huge amounts of gold thought to be buried there.<BR/> <BR/>Archaeologists will be immediately called in to assess findings if anything is discovered.<img src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=2670824"/>
