Callas jewellery auction raises record amountsFriday, 19th November 2004 (4343 views) The recently announced auction of top gold jewellery that belonged to opera star Maria Callas has raised a record amount.Sotheby's sold a collection of eleven pieces and has revealed that the items sold for a record $2.9 million. It has been revealed that the jewellery was auctioned in Geneva for an heir and considerably beat expectations. David Bennett, who is the executive director of the auction house's jewellery department, stated: "The collection sold at roughly three times the low end of the pre-sale estimate." The most expensive item was an 11.7-carat diamond ring, which sold for nearly $400,000, whilst an 18 carat gold evening bag sold for $45,000 - nine times its estimated value. Around 200 collectors and opera fans attended the event.
