Ancient tomb unearths gold coinsMonday, 13th December 2004 (5772 views) Greek gold coins have been unearthed in Egypt, as archaeologists unveiled a tomb full of 2,000-year-old mummies this weekend. The tomb belonged to a powerful family that governed some of western Egypt more than 2,000 years ago and it is thought the gold coins were put with the mummies to bribe the ferryman in the afterlife. According to the chief archaeologist at the site the tomb was robbed during the Roman era, MSNBC reports. In addition, the mummies found last week were not covered in gold or gilded, although previous reports had suggested otherwise. The Bahariya site is the largest excavation in Egypt and is known for its relics from the Greco-Roman period.
