US parents splash out on Christmas gifts

Thursday, 23rd December 2004 (4736 views)

The US tradition of giving teachers various gifts at Christmas is seeing a shift from coffee mugs and candles to more lavish items such as jewellery.

US teachers are increasingly being given lavish gifts at Christmas, with items as luxurious as gold bracelets, according to USA Today.

The old tradition of offering packets of sweets and handmade cards has changed to a philosophy of 'the bigger the better'.

Many families splurge on gifts for teachers now, with classroom mothers persuading parents to put money in for eye-popping gifts.

Some schools in New York are now banning gifts over a certain value however, so that parents do not feel obliged to buy huge, impressive presents.
