Auction site eBay has reported a 33 per cent increase in its watch and jewellery sales, in its first quarter results announced this week.

Total sales of watches and jewellery reached $1.6 billion, helping the firm achieve a record quarter with revenues up by 36 per cent.

Meg Whitman, president and CEO of eBay, said: "The eBay community is thriving, and we're in an excellent position to deliver on both the top line and profit goals we've set out for 2005 and beyond."

The online auction company sells a host of items, with gold jewellery and watches a popular choice with consumers who have to bid for items in a set time.

Jewellery and watch sales were also high in 2004 for the firm with the last quarter seeing gross merchandise volume (GMV), the total value of all successful listings on eBay's trading platforms for jewellery and watches, reach $1.68 billion.track
