A team of Iranian archaeologists has discovered ancient jewellery next to a skeleton buried in the Lafurak cemetery in the Mazandaran Province.

The Iron Age cemetery has only recently been discovered, but one skeleton has been unearthed wearing a gold earring on one ear and a silver one on another.

According to archaeologist Mehdi Abedini, the earrings suggest that when alive the person was a prominent person in society.

Previously only bronze and iron earrings were found at the site.

Excavations will now continue at the site, although work will need to be quick since the area and other villages are set to be destroyed by a new operational reservoir.
