Friday, 24th June 2005 (4426 views) The first gold coin ever struck in the US is to return to New York for the first time in more than a century.

Made in Manhattan in 1787 by a neighbour of George Washington, the Brasher Doubloon holds a unique position in American history, and is currently insured for US $6 million.

The legendary half-dollar size gold coin, purchased at an auction earlier this year by New York City native Steven Contursi, will be on public display at the New York Invitational Coin Show between June 30th and July 1st 2005.

"Being the first gold coin struck in the United States makes the Brasher Doubloon a national treasure with tremendous significance for American history," Mr Contursi, who is president of California-based Rare Coin Wholesalers, commented.

"It underscores the beginnings of our economic system. It's time the coin came back to visit its home in New York City."

One of only seven Brasher Doubloons of this type in the world today, this coin is yet unique, being the only coin to bear the designer's initials, EB, punched across the breast of an eagle depicted on the coin.
