Birla's treasure trove

Wednesday, 31st August 2005 (3307 views)

Hundreds of gold coins have been discovered at the house of the late Priyamvada Birla.

Dating from the Mughal, Gupta and Maurya periods the gold coins are estimated to be worth tens of millions of rupees.

After entering a secret strong room in the property, several artefacts were also taken from a safe.

Amongst these dazzling discoveries were a gold flower vase and a gold tea set.

The recovery was carried out on the orders of the Calcutta High Court after it requested an inventory of Mr Birla's possessions.

Mr Birla's sizable assets are currently being disputed between the Birla family and the chartered accountant Lodha.
