A white gold medallion of the Virgin Mary was one of the few items that groom Anthony McIntyre managed to salvage from his house before Hurricane Katrina stuck.

Mr McIntyre was wearing this white gold medallion at his marriage to wife Cotrena, which was organised for the couple by well-wishers in Des Moines, reports the Des Moines Register.

Both Mr and Mrs McIntyre were evacuated from their New Orleans home in the aftermath of the hurricane and now plan to stay in Des Moines.

The couple tied the knot with help from local businesses Skeffingtons Formal Wear, Gortz Haus Gallery and Artisan's Jewellery Design, that donated all the goods including the wedding dress and the food.

Although not all their family could be there, the happy couple expressed their thanks to everyone who had made it possible and declared themselves delighted.
