Barcelona's star midfielder and player of the year Ronaldinho, will be sporting gold in his shoes when his side takes on Real Zaragoza.

Nike, which sponsors his shoes, has created a special pair of shoes that has 24-carat gold on the Nike swoosh symbol.

The shoes will also have a gold tongue, an 'R' sewn in silver on the right foot and a silver '10' sewn into the left. There will also be five gold stars on the heels, each in honour of Brazil's World Cup wins.

Ronaldinho told the Associate Press: "I can't wait to wear the gold boots against Zaragoza. We were wondering how to give the boot a personal touch, so they copied the design of my neck chain to reproduce the 'R' and added my number 10."

Other athletes who have sported gold in the past include sprinter Michael Johnson and tennis number aces Roger Federer and Maria Sharpova.
