Controversy is raging over plans to hold a seminar on the ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui, which is based on the five Taoist elements of gold, wood, water, fire and earth.

The seminar was due to be organised and hosted by Nanjing University, but the university has now pulled out of funding the programme in the wake of consternation.

Although many Chinese people practice Feng Shui and consult Feng Shui masters before moving into new homes, it is actually illegal in China as it falls under the category of superstitious activity.

Feng Shui has recently witnessed a growth in popularity as many Westerners have been turning to the practise, which is translated as "wind and water".

As one of the five elements, gold has a central role to play within Feng Shui. These five elements are believed to be the basis of all created things and each is related to a particular time of day, direction and season.
