Indian consumers are being urged by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to buy hallmarked jewellery.

Only hallmarked jewellery ensures the purity of the gold, said the BIS's Yashpal Singh, who suggested that people should buy authenticated gold jewellery.

However, India only has 1,045 jewellery outlets offering hallmarked jewellery, something the BIS is working to change.

It is preparing to launch a pilot project in which 40 of the country's districts will receive hallmarking centres.

As well as the hallmarking centres, the BIS is intending to open additional gold testing facilities to augment the country's present total of eight.

The BIS is currently considering making it obligatory to hallmark gold jewellery.

The world's largest consumer of gold jewellery, India annually imports around 880 tonnes of the precious metal, much of which is used in jewellery production.
