Gold producer aids Goilala peopleTuesday, 2nd January 2007 (3065 views) A gold mining company is doing its fair share to help improve the quality of life of the Goilala population in Central province, Papua New Guinea, it has emerged.The Catholic Church has operated in this area that houses some 60,000 since the late 19th century and has been campaigning for years to secure better amenities such as education, health and roads for the Goilala people. A project to aid the community called the Tapini Integrated Development Programme has been partly funded by the charities Ausaid, NZaid as well as Emperor Mines' Tolukuma gold mine. Community leader Berai Manai told the National newspaper of the situation that led to action being taken: "We decided to work together with the church to improve our livelihood because we felt that we were been neglected by our own elected leaders." Emperor Mines has stated that its focus for gold production lies with the Australasian and Pacific Rim region. The Tolukuma gold mine is situated 100 kilometres north of Port Moresby and has been in use since 1995.
