The Polar Ural mountains are to produce their first 250 kilograms of gold before the year is out, according to the governor of the area.

Alexander Filipenko, the governor of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, appeared at a conference on the prospects of gold production in the Polar Urals area and said that by 2009 there will have been 1.5 tonnes produced here.

Mr Filipenko said: "We may state with confidence that commercial gold production in the Polar Urals area has been started."

Ambitious plans for this area have been in the pipeline ever since detailed geological prospecting surveys were undertaken in three promising areas. These are Talaiz, Vargavozh and Khalmer-Yu.

Now the proved commercial gold reserve comes to a total of ten tonnes when produced through an opencast method.

Factories to do this will be built in 2008 while geologists have also indicated that a variety of precious metals including copper, iron, coal and chromites are also in plentiful supply in the area.

The Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area is located in the central part of Russia in the centre of the West Siberian Plain and is Russia's main oil and gas region.
