A fourth-century gold wreath hailing from Macedonia has been allowed to go on display in a Greek museum.

The exquisite piece, alongside a marble statue of a women dating from the sixth century, has been handed back by the JP Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

The US museum's return of the two objects comprises part of a donation of four objects from its collection as part of a deal with Greece.

As a result of the donation of the gold wreath and the other objects, the prime minister of Greece, Costas Karamanlis, called for the return of the famous Elgin Marbles from England.

"The ecumenical demand for uniting the marbles of the Parthenon is gaining in strength and reach," he told Reuters.

The prime minister also said that the development of the new Acropolis Museum also "evaporates excuses" for the item's non-return.
