Archaeologists have discovered an ancient gold processing centre at the River Nile in Sudan.

The centre, which was discovered along with a graveyard, produced gold between 2000 and 1500 B.C.

Part of the Nubian kingdom, or Kush, the discoveries are evidence of mining activity in the area, experts claim.

"Nubia was renowned for its gold deposits," Geoff Emberling of the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute told National Geographic News.

"Even today, panning for gold is a traditional activity in the area," said Bruce Williams, his co-worker.

Archaeological work in the area is part of efforts to uncover treasures in the area before it is turned into a dam next year.

Kush was one of the first civilizations in the Nile River Valley before being conquered by Egypt's New Kingdom.
