Ghost ship 'could contain gold'

Wednesday, 20th June 2007 (2221 views)

A shipwreck has been discovered at the bottom of Lake Erie, US, by the Great Lakes Historical Society.

While the society has not yet released details of the location of the discovery or the ship itself, the Morning Journal suggests that it could be a lost ship containing gold.

According to the journal, the location of 277 out of an approximate 1,700 shipwrecks are known, with three of the reportedly lost vessels said to contain treasure in the form of the precious yellow metal.

The Morning Journal reports that the Anthony B Wayne sidewheeler suffered a boiler explosion in 1850 and sank.

''The captain was blown out of his bed, but he survived in a lifeboat that drifted ashore at Vermilion,'' David Kelch associate professor and extension specialist for the Ohio State University told the newspaper.

He added: "There is some thought that the Wayne was carrying a safe holding a payroll with $16,000 in gold coins."

Mr Kelch told the journal that salvagers hunt for the sunken treasure at night so that rivals cannot see their location.
