The new Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi took over three years to build, reportedly cost more than $3 billion (£1.5 billion) to construct and its design scheme pays much tribute to gold.

According to the New York Times, the hotel - where rooms can cost up to $11,300 per night - is decked out in gold from its golden rooftop domes to its gold-leaf lobby mosaics.

Flag poles are made of gold and the Emirates Palace's 1,002 chandeliers, resplendent in Swarovski crystal, are also crafted from gold.

"The frequently asked questions section [on the hotel's website] notes that the seven or six-star ratings do not officially exist. ... we classify Emirates Palace as just that, a palace," the newspaper observed.

Emirates Palace's bedroom suites are decorated in silk and gold leaf, while the hotel also boasts a mile of private beach and 12 restaurants. Rooms also come complete with there own butler.

A security guard told the New York Times that he had seen a number of famous people visiting the hotel including singer Jennifer Lopez, Fulham football club and German chancellor Gerhard Schroder.
