"Lost" gold auctioned in Bahrain

Friday, 17th August 2007 (2016 views)

In excess of 900 items, including gold jewellery, has been auctioned in Bahrain this week, it has been revealed.

The Gulf Daily News reports that the interior minister auctioned the goods at Isa town market on Wednesday.

According to the Bahrain newspaper, the hoard consists of items found by and handed to the police in the past year such as jewellery, watches, accessories and electronic devices.

"If there is anything about the item that helps us identify its owner, we contact the person immediately, but if there are no clues then we hold the item and wait for its owner to claim it," the interior ministry's lost and found items department head Fareed Janahi told the newspaper.

He added that all items at the auction are sold to the public except for gold jewellery, which is sold to the highest bidder in the gold market.

According to Mr Janahi, the majority of items that end up in the auction have been recovered from the airport - often by travellers heading home with too much luggage.
