"Cheeky" Aussie gold thieves caught on CCTV

Wednesday, 19th September 2007 (2984 views)

Victoria police have publicly released CCTV images of a man and woman who managed to steal a tray of gold chains from a Melbourne jewellery store in the hopes that someone will recognise the couple.

The pair, both in their mid-twenties, entered Hoskings Jewellers at about 17:30 local time on September 4th, police told the Herald Sun.

They loitered in the store for several minutes and the woman struck up a brief conversation with the sales clerk before darting behind a counter to snatch a tray of gold chains.

The sales assistant did not notice the theft until the after couple had left the shop, the newspaper reported.

"She's been very cheeky by having a conversation with the sales assistant first," senior constable Cassy Stone told the Australian newspaper.

Police hope that the clear CCTV images, particularly of the woman, will help to identify the thieves.

The Herald Sun reported that while local detectives believe the robbery was pre-meditated, they say it appears to be an isolated incident.
