A gold coin worth more than $800 (£387) has been found in a red Salvation Army donation kettle in Fargo, North Dakota, the Associated Press has reported.

Workers at the charity claim that the local chapter has received a gold coin during three of the past four years, although there is no report on who makes the significant donation.

This year's gold coin donation as been identified as an American Eagle, which are sold in proof, uncirculated and bullion finishes by the US Mint.

Fargo Salvation Army captain Adam Moore told the Associated Press that the coin donation was a nice surprise. He added that it will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with all funds going to support the charitable fundraiser.

This year, the Fargo Salvation Army hopes to raise a total of $600,000 through its Red Kettle Christmas Campaign.

It is set to officially launch nationwide during the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day football game on November 22nd with a musical performance by American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, who will also serve as honorary chairperson of the fundraising drive.
