Gold nugget displayed in London

Wednesday, 28th November 2007 (1966 views)

A large gold nugget is among the items to be displayed in a new gallery at the Natural History Museum in London, the BBC has reported.

In addition to the gold nugget, the collection will include a showcase of crystals, metals, gems and meteorites, described by the museum curator as the "creme de la creme" in the world of minerals.

"Some of the items are so unique they are literally priceless, especially in terms of their scientific value," said Alan Hart of the museum.

The story of the Latrobe gold nugget, discovered in Australia during the country's famed gold rush, will be displayed alongside the item, he explained.

Among the other treasures on display in the new Vault gallery are the "cursed" Heron-Allen amethyst, pink gemstones from Madagascar and a rare meteorite from Mars which was discovered in Egypt in the early 20th century.

The permanent gallery is scheduled to be open from November 28th onwards, according to the Natural History Museum.
