Another anonymous gold coin donation to the Salvation Amy has been made in the United States, this time in Arizona, the Associated Press has reported.

The latest in a series of gold coin donations made to the charity organisation through its Red Kettle Christmas campaign took place in Prescott, which has been experiencing a shortfall in festive donations this year.

However, the anonymous deposit of a $50 1998 one-ounce American Eagle gold coin, which is thought to have an approximate value of $800 (£387), may make up for fewer donations this year.

The coin was deposited inside a red Salvation Army kettle in a small envelope, according to Major Kyle Trimmer.

"I just opened a package and said, 'Hey! We have a gold coin here'," he exclaimed.

"We were excited," he added.

The Red Kettle Christmas campaign in Prescott will benefit around 600 local families by providing them with food vouchers and toys during the holiday season.

Earlier this week, Action 3 news in Omaha, Nebraska reported that two gold South African Krugerrands worth a combined total of $1,040 were anonymously dropped in Salvation Army red kettles in the city.
