Gold production is on target at the Mesquite mining project in California, according to the latest assessment of the company that owns the rights to the site.

Western Goldfields currently anticipates producing 15,000 oz of gold during the first three months of next year, having already prestripped and exposed around 900,000 tons of new ore.

Bosses at the company have expressed their satisfaction at the present rate of production at the Mesquite mine, noting that the project is operating within its set budget.

"Our prestrip mining and construction of the leach pad and facilities is on schedule to bring the mine into full production in January 2008," said Raymond Threlkeld, president and chief executive of Western Goldfields.

"In 2008, we expect to place approximately 220,000 ounces onto the leach pad," he added.

The Mesquite mine is the principal asset of the Western Goldfields company, which focuses on resource extraction in California and bought the rites to the project from Newmount Mining in 2003.
