A gold coin has been discovered in a Salvation Army (SA) donation kettle in North Dakota, US.

Every year the organisation launches its kettle drive to help raise funds for its activities across America.

While the drive had started well with a $1,000 (£505) donation in its first week, the addition of the rare gold coin has given a welcome boost to the organisation's fundraising efforts.

SA spokeswoman Lori Jury illustrated that the coin was a South African Krugerrand coin and is worth an estimated $600 to $900.

She added that its discovery would make this year's kettle drive in Valley City one of the best ever, raising over $23,000.

The gold coin joins at least nine others that have been found already in Salvation Army kettles around America this year, with one discovered in the North Dakotan town of Fargo.

Founded in London in 1865 by William and Catherine Booth, the Salvation Army is a Christian charity that supports deprived communities and has branches around the world.
