South African mining firm Simmer & Jack saw a 16 per cent rise in gold production for the last quarter of 2007 compared to the corresponding period a year before, the company has announced.

Overall gold production went from 35,406 ounces to 41,046 ounces, it said, mainly thanks to an expansion strategy that saw the Ezulwini Mine and the Buffelsfontein Tailings Recovery Project come on stream.

Improved infrastructure at Buffelsfontein and better recoveries at another project, TGME, contributed further to the overall production increase.

This year saw a new cleaning in place (CIP) plant start production at Buffelsfontein, which increased throughput from 140,000 tonnes per month (tpm) to 170,000 tpm and pushed recoveries from 92.5 per cent to 94 per cent for the December quarter.

Simmers chief executive, Gordon Miller, said: "We have been through a period of intense rehabilitation and restructuring at Buffels, which currently produces the bulk of Simmers' gold."

Simmers & Jack currently aims to produce one million ounces of gold production by 2012.
