An 18ct gold pendant is among the prizes that will be awarded to the winner of a new TV search for America's most inspirational mother, it has been announced.

The heart-shaped pendant, which is trimmed with diamonds, is part of a package of prizes for the eventual winner of America's Favorite Mom, who will also have a rose named after her.

The one-off special, which is being planned to commemorate 100 years of Mother's Day in the US on May 11th, is currently looking for nominations from children and adults across the nation.

In the run-up to the final, 25 semi-finalists will appear on NBC's Today programme and viewers will be able to vote for their favourite.

Mother's Day came about in 1908 after a campaign by Anna Jarvis to commemorate her mother, Ann Jarvis, who had been active in promoting peace and workers' health since the end of the American civil war.

The first event took place in Grafton, Virginia, when 407 children and their mothers attended a celebration at Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church.
