Walkway reveals New Zealand gold mining historyFriday, 28th March 2008 (2184 views) A new walkway revealed in Southland this week will reveal part of the gold mining history of New Zealand, it has emerged. The loop track starts at the bottom of Longwood Range, around 12 km west of Riverton and will also act as an entrance to the more tricky Te Ararora route that runs along an old water race alongside the range, the New Zealand Herald reports. Earlier this month, country-pop crossover star Shania Twain and prime minister Helen Clark opened a 29 km stretch that runs by the singer's pastoral leases in Otago. Kevin Hawkes, of the Te Araroa Southland Trust, told NZPA: "From the stone walling, to the channels and pits in the ground there is evidence of the Chinese and European gold mining activities in the area." Inspired by recent film The Bucket List, news.com.au recommends a trip to the former gold-mining village of Arrowtown as a perfect holiday while the time is still available, with the area offering local crafts and "dinky" tea shops.
