Gold leaf tops "pies fit for a king"Monday, 21st April 2008 (1315 views) Edible 23.5ct gold leaf is being used to top ten "pies fit for a king" in order for a bake sale with a difference, according to reports. The pies, which also include "exotic" mushrooms and South African wine, are the creation of Johannesburg chef Wicus Prinsloo, who came up with dishes for the city's upcoming wine show, according to the Times. Each of the ten pies will be auctioned at the event to raise money for the Give Me A Second Chance fund, which helps local children by providing educational scholarships and sports equipment. The paper adds that in total, Mr Prinsloo's shopping list for the pies' ingredients came to around 50,000 South African rand (£3,238), which included duck specially imported from France. Commenting on the upcoming sale, he said he expected the "exquisite" dishes to fetch "at least R15000 to R20000 apiece". The pie auction will open for bids on May 5th. The Johannesburg Wine Show, meanwhile, runs from June 27th to June 29th.
