An 18ct yellow gold ring by jewellery designer Sarah Herriot has won the Fine Jewellery Award at the 100th Goldsmiths' Craftsmanship and Design Awards (GCDA), according to reports.

According to Fibre2Fashion, the award was presented by design house International Jewellery London (IJL), which is celebrating 50 years of organising the UK's only dedicated jewellery exhibition.

Each year, the recipient of the award, which the site says celebrates "cutting edge design" in fashion jewellery, is given £1,000 in cash and a place at the upcoming IJL show.

IJL's Chris Hartley said: "We are extremely impressed by the high standard of entries at this year's awards. Each year at IJL, the standard of design goes from strength to strength and it seems that this trend is set to continue."

The GCDA were established in 1908 by the Goldsmiths' Craft and Design Council to encourage and promote the best jewellery design in the UK. It encourages participation in the event with two exhibitions - one at Goldsmiths' Hall and the IJL show at Earls Court, London.

According to the site, designers and industry figures set to judge this year's competition include Shaun Leane, Martyn Pugh and Michael Allchin of the Birmingham Assay Office.
