Gold to go under hammer at auction

Friday, 16th May 2008 (663 views)

A number of gold coins are among approximately 3,800 lots set to go under the hammer in an auction of Colonial and Continental currency being held in California, according to reports.

There are around 1,000 gold items set for the auction block at the event, which is being held by Heritage Auction Galleries at the Long Beach Expo, numismaster.com states.

Highlights, the site says, include a 1907 Saint-Gaudens $10 (£5) piece, which the site says was minted but never issued. Around 500 of these coins are believed to have been struck and are often sought after as a collection.

Other gold items up for sale include a C Bechtler $5 coin with a star design, a Clark, Gruber & Co $10 piece dating from 1860 and a Wass, Molitor & Co round $50 coin with a sticker from the Certified Acceptance Corporation.

The auction will also feature a collection of half-dollar coins, two 1794 Flowing Hair dollars and a number of offerings from the Liberty Collection of American Colonial coins, including George Washington pieces such as a gold 1799 funeral urn medal.

Heritage Auction Galleries, which is the largest auctioneer of collectibles in the world, will host the Colonial and Continental auction from May 28th to May 30th.
