Gold ring 'offers clues to medieval life'

Friday, 16th May 2008 (1341 views)

A recently unearthed gold ring dating from the 12th century could give "crucial clues" to the fashions and lifestyles of medieval Wales, according to reports.

The ring, which also features rose quartz, is part of a collection of artefacts recently donated to the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, the Western Mail reports.

It was discovered in Rhoose, near Barry on Wales' southern coast, in September of last year by a member of the public, the newspaper adds.

Dr Mark Redknap, a mediaeval specialist and curator at the National Museum of Wales, said objects such as the ring and other items in the museum's archaeology collection "tell the tale" of how the country's inhabitants have lived through the ages.

"These decorative rings are a valuable addition to this story, uncovering information about fashion, style and other aspects of life in medieval Wales," he added.

The gold ring, along with ten other items recovered from the Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan regions, was officially declared "treasure" at a recent inquest at Cardiff coroner's court.
