Indian gold collection in new exhibitionFriday, 23rd May 2008 (1417 views) A new exhibition of gold jewellery celebrating the "beauty and awe-inspiring craftsmanship" of India's jewellery makers is set to go on show in the United States, according to reports.Qconline.com states that the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, will host 150 pieces from the Susan L Beningson Collection for the show, which has been organised by the Asia Society and Museum of New York. The site adds that the show - titled Gold Blossoms - not only showcases the design skills of Indian jewellers but also the social and religious importance of traditional jewellery in Indian culture. Rings, anklets, combs, hair pendants, necklaces and crowns are included in the display, all of which were used to convey "complex signals" about the wearer's origins, beliefs, marital status, wealth and social position, it says. The Figge Art Museum opened as the Davenport Municipal Art Gallery in 1925. Today, it exhibits over 3,500 artefacts including paintings, sculpture and jewellery dating from the 16th century to the present day.
