TV series to follow deep sea gold hunters

Wednesday, 28th May 2008 (1076 views)

A new television series is set to follow the exploits of an underwater exploration and salvage company that has recovered thousands of gold coins and treasure, according to reports.

News agency Reuters says the 11-part series by the Discovery Channel will record the efforts of Odyssey Marine Exploration, which looks for shipwrecked cargo and artefacts deep in the ocean.

The company has recovered a number of gold and other precious treasures, including 50,000 coins and 14,000 other items from the wreck of the Civil War-era SS Republic in 2003, as well as over half a million coins including gold tokens from the Black Swan wreck.

In total, the treasure recovered from the Black Swan alone weighed in at approximately 17 tonnes and its value was estimated at around $500 million (£250 million).

Meanwhile, gold from the SS Republic has been displayed around the United States as part of a travelling exhibition entitled Shipwreck! Pirates & Treasure.

Odyssey, which was established in 1994 by John Morris and Greg Stemm, is based in Tampa, Florida.
