A touring exhibition of more than 200 items of gold, treasure and weaponry that once belonged to genuine pirates of the high seas is coming to Philadelphia, it has been reported.

Philly.com states that the show, entitled "Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship", explores the social, political and economic conditions of the 18th century Caribbean through the true story of one vessel, the Whydah.

The ship was originally built as a slave transport but later fell into the hands of pirates. It was eventually sunk off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, during a "raging storm" in 1717, the site says.

Artefacts including coins and gold, as well as cannons, pistols and knives are displayed in the exhibition alongside a partial replica of the vessel and its original ship's bell.

The show also includes items of pirate dress and everyday objects that the crew would have used during its long journeys at sea.

The Real Pirates exhibition will be hosted at the Franklin Institute, which describes the show as the "world's first exhibition of authentic pirate treasure".
