Wednesday, 20th August 2008 (4625 views) A man and his metal detector have uncovered a rare gold ring in a field in Leicestershire, reports the Daily Mail.John Stevens discovered the ring which is believed to date back to the 11th century and could be worth tens of thousands of pounds. Experts have suggested the ring was once owned by a member of the church or even royalty considering its uniqueness. Antiquities specialist Brett Hammond, from Time Line Originals, said: "Common people in that era were not even allowed to own gold, so it must have been owned by a powerful person." Mr Stevens said he and his fellow metal detector enthusiasts decided to search the field after a local farmer ploughed the area. He added he was about to give up and head home when his detector picked up a strong signal from the earth which led to the discovery of the gold ring, five inches beneath the surface. Earlier this month, a treasure hunter in Nottingham found a 1,400-year-old gold cross which is estimated to be worth £25,000, reported the Telegraph.
