Macau council learns gold testing in Singapore

Wednesday, 20th August 2008 (514 views)

Representatives from Macau's Consumer Council Inspection Centre have visited Singapore in order to receive training from gold examination professionals, reports the Macau Daily Times.

Established in 1979, the Singapore Assay Office is a "world leader" in examining, analysing and assaying gold.

Jewellers in Singapore can ask for their gold pieces to be tested by the office in order to prove and ensure the purity of the metal they create and sell.

Cupellation is the method most commonly and reliably used as a method to test the yellow metal.

In this process, the X-ray Florescene Spectrometer is used to show the core structure of a metal and can prevent the practice of mixing low-value metals with gold.

Chief assayer, Ng Siew Hua, said Macau's Consumer Council will gain further acceptance internationally if it introduces the method to test gold.

Macau is in eastern Asia, bordering China and the South China Sea.
