One of the biggest open-area historical digs in West Sussex is to be opened up to amateur archaeologists, reports the West Sussex County Times.

The excavation in Selhurst Park is 125 metres by 75 metres and will start from the beginning of next month.

Previous artefacts found at digs in 2005 and 2006 in the area uncovered a rare 50 BC Gallic gold coin which was believed to have been minted in order to fund the war against Caesar.

Chichester district council and the Volunteer Archaeology Projects Trust will coordinate the excavation along with helpers from the Chichester District Archaeology Society.

James Kenny, an archaeologist from the Chichester district council, said: "The council cannot fund large-scale digs, but these big, open-area digs give us much information.

"Getting all age groups closely involved and keen to learn more is great."

The Chichester District Archaeology Society was founded in 1991 with the aim of increasing public involvement in and awareness of archaeology.
