Several gold companies have been given awards for innovation and accomplishments in the mining industry.

Gemcom Software has unveiled the winners of its Awards of Excellence competition, which honours firms for outstanding photographs and images produced using the company's technology.

Entries were submitted by hundreds of organisations from 29 different countries.

Vice president of Gemcom, Robert Selzler, said he was delighted with the enthusiasm shown by those involved.

"The creativity and diversity of both the participants and their submissions is a testament to the global village we live in," he added.

Chinese firm Sino Gold Mining, Dragon Mining from Sweden, and Australian outfit GBS Gold were among those who received awards for exploration and high-tech photography.

Meanwhile, a ceremony for the Legends in Mining Awards was held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney last week in order to recognise some of the best explorers of the year.
