A collection of gold treasures found in Bulgaria went on show at the country's National History Museum this week.

Led by Professor Borislav Borislavov from Sofia University, a team of archaeologists uncovered the precious pieces during an excavation near Harmanli.

They include a necklace made up of 320 golden beads and two spindle-shaped objects made of gold.

Professor Borislavov has stated that the items are a significant find for Bulgarian historians and that they may shed some light on past civilisations that lived in the region.

Recently, an ancient gold wreath was discovered in Greece by an excavation carried out by the University of Thessaloniki.

It was found in the ruins of the historic region of Aigai and is thought to date back to around the fourth century BC - the time when Philip and Alexander reigned.

Thessaloniki, situated in Northern Greece, is a lasting remnant of the "wealth and magnificence" of the Byzantine empire, the university's site notes.
