Bulgarian gold necklace discovered by archaeologistsWednesday, 29th October 2008 (540 views) Archaeologists working in Bulgaria have unearthed a bronze era gold necklace featuring 320 beads. The necklace was found at a dig on a burial hill in Izvorovo, Harmani municipality, by a team of experts led by Borislav Borislavov of Sofia University and Nadezhda Ivanova of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. According to the country's National Museum of History, additional funding for research has led to the discovery of the rare 1.5 m piece of jewellery south of Sakar Mountain. The layers of the burial hill date from the Bronze Age and the Roman era, with a number of findings from the dig placed on display at a press conference at the museum. A mound of quartz with a clay foundation built in the Bronze Age hid the valuable gold necklace and a number of other burial objects, some of the finest ever discovered from the era. Researchers believe that the grave must have been created for a very important man, possibly a king or a high priest.
