An amateur treasure hunter has uncovered a hoard of nearly 6,000 ancient Roman gold coins in a field.

Dating back 1,700 years, the coins date from the eras of several different emperors and are thought to have been buried by the same person.

The 79-year-old metal detecting enthusiast found the coins buried in two pots in Sully, Vale of Glamorgan, in April this year.

Historians believe that a significant amount of Roman activity took place in the region during the time the coins were buried.

According to experts, the hoard is one of the largest discoveries of Roman coins ever recorded in Wales and the national museum is hoping to put them on public display.

A value has yet to be placed on the find, which has now been declared treasure trove and will be assessed by an independent committee.
