A local beachcomber in Connecticut has found a gold ring belonging to a young couple he bumped into.

Richard Tremblay, a metal detector enthusiast who searches beaches and state parks, met a couple along Hopeville Pond in Griswold a couple of weeks ago who were searching for a white gold wedding band that the young woman had dropped in the sand.

The US pair, both in their 20s, were searching the sand using a bucket, shovel and a metal detector when Mr Tremblay spoke to them and found out that they were newlyweds searching for the gold ring.

He now hopes that they will contact the Norwich Bulletin, which has run the story, so that he can reunite them with the wedding band they dropped when they married.

"To be able to bring it back to them is probably the biggest joy I could experience," Mr Tremblay, 61, told the newspaper. "I'm a real romantic, if you couldn’t tell. I love happy endings."

Meanwhile, British treasure hunters found a total of 749 objects in 2007, including a gold Iron Age necklace, as metal detectors become increasingly popular, the Treasure Annual Report reveals.
