Tuesday, 25th August 2009 (3382 views) A variety of gold items have gone on display at a museum dedicated to the history of smuggling in India. The Indian Customs and Central Excise Museum in Panaji, Goa was opened by Indian finance minister Pranab Mukherjee last month. Among its exhibits are gold nuggets that had been hidden under the seat of an airline toilet or in the heel of a shoe and a gold idol worth more than 10 million rupees (£125,542) that was smuggled into India from Nepal, according to AFP. Retrieving the items to go on display at the Indian Customs and Central Excise Museum was a long process, said Lillian Fernandes, the officer in charge of the museum. "We have sourced and seized artefacts from all customs and central excise warehouses and the other museums across the country," she remarked. Other items on display at the museum include antiquities, rare historical manuscripts, videos, CDs, wooden sculptures, coins, animal skins and statues, according to the United News of India agency.
