Tuesday, 29th September 2009 (3379 views) The First Spouse gold coin commemorating Margaret Taylor will be issued this winter, the US Mint has confirmed.According to the mint's updated 2009 Product Release Scheduled Proof published yesterday (September 28th), collectors will be able to purchase proof and uncirculated versions of the 24-c gold piece. Born in Maryland in 1788, Margaret 'Peggy' Smith met a young army lieutenant named Zachary Taylor in 1809 while visiting her sister in Kentucky. They married a year later and when Taylor was sent to the Mexican War, his deeply religious wife promised that if he returned safely, she would never go into society again. She stayed true to her vow even after her husband won the presidency in 1849. Although she welcomed friends to the White House and kept a watchful eye on the family table, she took no part in formal functions. President Taylor died a little over a year after taking office in July 1850.
