An exhibition featuring gold jewellery and other items from the history of the famous 19th century Crocker family has opened in Sacramento, California.

The Treasures, Curiosities and Secrets: The Crockers and the Gilded Age display at the Crocker Art Museum explores the major events that shaped the rise of the Crockers.

Headed by Edwin Bryant and Margaret Crocker, they were among the biggest art patrons in the state and eventually became rich from the railroad industry.

Running until February 28th 2010, the exhibition includes a gold brooch believed to have been made in 1880 that was worn by Margaret Crocker, as well as artefacts and memorabilia relating to Jennie Crocker Fassett's Korean gold mines.

The Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 after Margaret Crocker presented the Crocker art gallery building, its grounds and the EB Crocker art collection 'in trust for the public' to the city of Sacramento and the California Museum Association.

It is the longest continuously operating art museum in western America.
