Gold Olympic medals are rarely made available to collectors, but when they are those made from solid gold are the ones to look out for, according to one auctioneer.

Ingrid O'Neil, who runs auctions of Olympic memorabilia auction in Vancouver, Washington, told the Vancouver Sun that her biggest sale to date was a gold medal from the 1904 St Louis Olympic Games.

The item sold for $50,000 (£30,126), thanks to that particular event featuring real gold medals, she explained.

Ms O'Neil explained: "There were four Olympiads that had real gold medals: Paris 1900, St Louis 1904, London 1908 and Stockholm 1912."

Last month, the Royal Canadian Mint announced that it is producing gold and other medals with a unique undulating shape for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada next year.

The medals will feature works of contemporary Aboriginal art. Medals struck for the Paralympics will be made in a slightly different shape.
