An exhibition of Indian art currently underway in Hastings features a "breathtaking" sculpture decorated with gold.

This is according to the Rye and Battle Observer, which was commenting on the Indian Summer event at the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.

Running until December 6th, the exhibition displays 21 Indian miniature paintings from the period between 1650 and 1850 that are on loan from the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art in Norwich.

It also offers a number of more contemporary works, one of these being a piece entitled Water Buffalo by Russell Webb, which takes the form of a buffalo skull that has been "intricately carved" and is decorated with fine gold leaf, according to the newspaper.

"The collision of beauty and death owes something to Damien Hirst, but the effect is overwhelming and almost impossible to tear yourself away from," it says.

Other artists whose work is on display in the exhibition include Annabel Tilley, Nicola Ashmore, Chris Milton, Melissa White, Rose Miller and Josephine Ho.
