Wednesday, 18th November 2009 (2828 views) Dozens of rare gold boxes have been sold by Christie's in a London-based auction.Yesterday's (November 17th) Centuries Of Style sale saw over 40 gold boxes dating from the 18th century onwards sold, with some fetching hundreds of thousands of pounds. The top-selling such item was a fine Prussian rococo enamelled gold box made by Daniel Baudesson in the 18th century, which sold for £657,250 - smashing its original estimate of between £150,000 and £200,000. A Saxon gold-mounted 'stein-cabinet' snuff box by Johann-Christian Neuber also attracted a final bid of £289,250. The Tredegar Gold Cup, which is a George III two-handled cup and cover presented to Sir Charles Gould by the Society for Equitable Assurances on Lives and Survivorships in 1782, was sold for £97,250. Earlier this year, Christie's sold 16 gold boxes from Yves Saint Laurent's own collection in an auction in Paris for 1.23 million (£1.09 million).
