Gold coins have been the embellishment of choice for one top designer at Milan Fashion Week, it has been reported.

Luxury Italian brand Dolce and Gabanna accessorised coats, jackets and shirts with gold coin embellishments, as well as earrings made from the precious metal, in its autumn/winter 2010 collection, the Independent states.

Additionally, gold was also eyed by clothing designer Roberto Cavalli, who used gold embroidery in contrast to the use of sturdy fabrics such as sheepskin.

It is thought that this fashion trend will see gold jewellery become an increasingly popular option throughout 2010 - The Knot magazine recently forecast the precious metal to be prevalent in a large number of nuptials in the coming year.

"Taking a cue from the fashion runways, gold is the new metal for engagement rings and wedding bands," it stated.

Similarly, Simon Chilvers writing for the Guardian, recently suggested that gold cuffs are the "perfect way to make a statement".
